This not having an oven thing, has really taken its toll on my passion for cooking and baking, but luckily it's spring now and there are plenty of fun things to do outdoors!
On Easter, we went on a little tour of the tulip fields before heading to a backyard picnic with the family.
I love Dutch cows! They're so adorable and make the yummiest cheese!
It's tulip season! Probably my favorite time of year in Holland :-)
These looked like Blue Bonnets, which got me very excited seeing as it's the Texas state flower, but I believe they're actually something else called Bluebells. Oh well, close enough! And now I wish I had some Bluebell ice cream.
These are my favorite Dutch cows. We call them Oreo cows. Isn't this a gorgeous scene?
The pretty table E's sister set up in her backyard for an Easter picnic. Lovely!
This Saturday was Queen's Day here in Holland. That's the day the whole nation celebrates Queen Beatrix's birthday. Though her birthday is actually in January, she celebrates it with the people on her mother's, Queen Juliana's, birthday on April 30th. I have yet to experience a Queen's day when the weather wasn't just amazing! We're so lucky!
We began by hanging out the Dutch flag and taking a walk around the city.
This is the only day of the year when people are allowed to sell their stuff on the streets. The whole city turns into one giant garage sale and one giant sea of Orange! This "oranjegekte", or orange craziness, is to celebrate the Royal House of Orange. (These 3 pictures were from 2009 when my Mom visited on Queen's Day.)
Aside from the piles of junk for sale, you find children and musicians performing for your coins, tons of food and drink stands, and canals full of people partying on boats. It's so fun to watch boats full of people jumping up and down to Euro dance music. I love it!
We brought Clayton along early in the morning before the crowds got too out of control and we bought him an orange bandana :-)
My mom gave me these earrings a while ago. Aren't they perfect for Queen's Day? I love them!
On Sunday we decided it was time to buy a BBQ grill. The weather is just too amazing not to celebrate it outdoors! Maybe now that I have this, I can think of more recipes to blog about ;-)
These are just veggie kabobs with olive oil, pepper and Cavendar's Greek Seasoning. Yum!
Our friend, Sil, came over to help us break it in.
Here's to many more weekends with amazing weather, great friends and fun!

Love the BBQ! We need to get something for our balcony one of these days, although my husband smokes all the neighbours out when we try to BBQ so I'm not entirely sure we should. Maybe we need to get a light one that we can easily drag to a park and BBQ there!
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a good weekend, love the earrings!
Haha, our started smoking quite a lot when we first lit it and then we noticed the neighbors above had their laundry hanging out lol. Oops! Luckily it calmed down after a few minutes.
ReplyDeleteHow fun to have Queen's Day! And I have always dreamed of seeing the tulips bloom in Holland, how gorgeous! For your grill, you have to try naan bread. I usually make it on the stove but recently tried it on the grill and my word, it's all I want to eat now.
ReplyDeleteI love naan Audra! Do you have a recipe for it?
ReplyDeleteHurray for Queen's Day! Happy to see pictures of your spring in Holland! Those tulip fields are gorgeous and your little 'bluebells' are called grape hyacinth. I can just imagine the scent in those bulbfields! Heavenly!
ReplyDeleteThe oreo cookie cows are belted Galloways. Can you tell we're from farm country? I like oreo cookie cows as a name far better, though! ;-)
Miss seeing your losts, Lizzy! Get that oven fixed! Until then, have funwith your new grill! I'm making lemon chicken on ours for the first grilling of the season! Folks in for dinner tonight!
You are a plethora of knowledge, Susan ;-) I think "Belted Galloways" sounds really pretty too. I wish our oven would come back, but unfortunately we haven't heard anything from the company yet. I did make something today while I was at a friend's house and it's gooooood! Will be posting soon :-)
ReplyDeleteLizzy,
ReplyDeleteCongratz for the new bbq....and I just found your blog and i am overwhelmed with information...I just loved your recipes and will sure give it a try to each one of them :)
I have a Asian vegetarian husband and I am from South america that is not very well known for its vegetarian dishes, and mom trained me to not be able to make anything taste reasonable without some chicken stock in it...so the first 1 year of marriage was a gastronomic catastrophe for the hubby :D...
We are currently in India and I cook a lot of vegetarian food and learnt how to master the Indian food trick, but for the next 5 years we will be living in Nederlands and was scared I might get cooking impaired again without ideas of what to do and how to manage..but your blog brought me new hope..thanks a lot I already love you =*
